Bowen Therapy is a gentle form of
'hands-on' bodywork that initiates and then facilitates the body’s own healing
processes. The therapist uses thumbs and
fingers on precise points of the body to perform Bowen's unique sets of
rolling-type moves, which stimulate the muscles, soft tissue and energy within
the body.
These careful moves prompt the body to reset imbalances, healing injuries and long-standing complaints and relieving pain and tension. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle, and very relaxing.
There is no manipulation and no force used. Because Bowen Therapy addresses every system and organ in the body, right down to the cellular level, it has been very effective in successfully treating a huge variety of diseases, disorders, and dysfunctions in the body. The body normally responds quickly to the Bowen technique, making it a very time and cost-effective treatment option.

Clients usually lie on a massage table. If
this is not possible the client can receive a treatment sitting or standing, or lying
on a normal bed or sofa. The technique involves a series of gentle moves over
soft tissue. It does not require deep pressure, although the depth of the
pressure will vary between clients according to their specific health status.
Bowen moves may be done on skin, or through light clothing.
There are frequent pauses during the Bowen
session to give the body time to register and respond to the work being done.
During these pauses it is common for the practitioner to leave to the room or
move away from the table allowing the client to become as relaxed as possible.
It is not uncommon for clients to fall asleep during treatment.
Compared with other forms of body work the Bowen technique is extremely gentle. It is not uncommon for people after their first session to truly wonder if it’s doing anything! Comments like “Is that it?” or “How can that work?” are not unusual. They cannot initially see how the tiny moves of the Bowen could affect anything.
Its effectiveness should NOT be underestimated just because it is so gentle!
Bowen Therapy balances and stimulates energy flow. As such this often results in people being extremely relaxed after a treatment. The restorative process begins once the body is relaxed, and the healing process continues to work after the treatment.
Common responses to treatment involve feelings of improved energy, more restful sleep, better mechanics and reduced pain. At times people may transition through a ‘healing process’ where they experience stiffness or flu-like symptoms. Generally these reactions only last for 24 – 36 hours. Drinking water and doing gentle exercise will help reduce these symptoms.

Generally 1- 3 treatments are needed for
most conditions. Complex chronic conditions often require longer treatment but
not always. How the client responds
guides the practitioner to how much work can be done in a session. As such,
each session is unique to the individual. Typically a session can last anything
from about 30 to 60 minutes. Sessions are held every 5 to 10 days until they
are needed less frequently. Top up"
treatments every six months are of great benefit to help prevent re-injury and to
help you to maintain an optimal vital balance.
